  1. The Definition and Development Goal ofDiscipline

 As one of the only two first-level doctorial discipline of “Computer Science and Technology” in Zhejiang Province (the other one is in Zhejiang University), our discipline focuses on the national critical scientific problems, the direction of industrial development and the requirement of district economy and society, and devotes great effort to make breakthroughs in the theories of ultra-high speed architecture, computer software, big data, cognitive computing and virtual reality, in the applications of critical technologies of visual understanding, multimedia analysis, cloud computer, mobile internet, internet of things, and in the industrialization of secure cloud storage, 2025 high-end industrial key software development platform, and smart city field software, etc.

The long term general goal of our discipline is: become the academic highland which points out the direction of Zhejiang information economic development and deep integration of informationization and industrialization, the cultivation center of high level talents of innovation and entrepreneurship, the district research center of new generation technologies such as cloud computing, big data, internet of things, etc., and the novel industrialization result transform center in the areas of intelligent manufacturing and smart city. We will make greater contributions to district economic and social development, national information industry and national defense industry, our overall research quality and social contribution level will achieve the first class in China.

  1. The Advantages andCharacteristics

High level IT talent cultivation: In 1981, our discipline started to enroll students of Master in Computer Application Technology. Computer Science and Technology Program is national characteristic construction program, national managed program. Our discipline is the first institution with the right to award master degree of Computer Application Technology in Zhejiang province managed universities. We are also awarded to be the only key of key discipline of this area in Zhejiang. Our discipline currently has the right to award PhD, Master and Bachelor degree. As our discipline’s tradition, talent cultivation is always one of the most important jobs. Since 1997, we have been awarded with 6 national level education result prizes, three of them are mainly carried out by us. The students in our discipline won over 110 prizes in national or higher level competitions, including entering the ACM Programming Contest world finals three times and getting UPE individual awards. In 2015, our team ranked 28 in world final. As the Zhejiang provincial talent cultivation model innovation experimental zone, our discipline actively explores the cooperation models in training high level IT research and development talent with famous companies such as Google, Alibaba, Huawei, Hikvision, Tencent, Baidu, NetEase, etc. The student study and practice bases have also been jointly established with them. 76% of our graduators find jobs in these famous companies, and many of them now hold key technical positions such as department managers or program supervisors. We are now the largest IT talent cultivation center in Zhejiang Province.

Specific scientific research: our discipline has very strong staff team, with a National Thousand People Plan winner, two Outstanding talents in the new century of the Ministry of Education winners, two Provincial Thousand People Plan winners and 18 other provincial level award winners. 93.3% of our academic staffs  have PhD degree and 40% of our staffs have oversea background. There are over 10 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories, bases, centers and platforms in our discipline which devote great effort to the theoretical and application research in the areas of intelligent embedded system, cloud computing and big data, computer vision, cognitive and intelligent computing, services computing and services software. International scientific research collaboration base is established by our discipline. The faculty members of our discipline have been engaged in more than 100 national level research programs including National Scientific Foundation Programs, National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), National High-Tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), Key Technologies R&D Program of China, and The National Defense Pre - Research Foundation Programs as well as more than 100 provincial programs. The cooperation partners of these programs include many famous universities and institutes all around the world. In recent five years, our faculty members published 631 research papers, in which 370 are indexed by SCI/EI including more than 10 of which belongs to CCF A class and ESI highly cited papers. At the same time, 58 innovation patents are authorized to our faculty members. In the respective of achievements in scientific research, our discipline won a second prize of State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, 12 ministry or province prizes as well as multiple first prizes from different trade associations.

Social Service which leads the district technology development and supports the improvement of national defense technology: in the areas of mobile embedded system and high-end industrial software, a professor of our discipline holds the position of PLCopen chair in China; in the area of cloud computing service and field big data, our discipline establishes Zhejiang provincial network media cloud processing and analysis engineering technical research center with enterprise; in the area of data storage, weestablish

 Zhejiang provincial data storage, transmission and application technical research key laboratory with enterprise; in the area of internet of things and information security, we establish Zhejiang provincial internet of things technical innovation service platform. Our discipline is the only one in Zhejiang province managed universities which support large software services to military. Many systems designed and developed by us have been widely used in military industry.

  1. The Goal of TalentCultivation

Our discipline devotes our best effort to cultivate students with healthy personality, innovative thinking, broad background, global view and social respectability, and with solid fundamental theory and good skill of engineering practice in the areas of computer architecture, big data processing, embedded system  development, intelligent computing, network information security, graphics and image processing, internet of things construction, etc., which will support the transform of Zhejiang economy and national strategic development.

  1. Direction Design ofDiscipline

    1. Artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Focusing on the area of deep learning Brain-Computer-Interface, Brain-Like Computing, compressive sensing, man-machine coordination and intelligent internet of things, bold a set of core technologies of three dimensional coordination of Human-Machine-Things, and serve the application areas of internet+ and artificial intelligence,etc.

    2. Network and information security. Based on the security of internet, security of internet of things and cryptography, make breakthroughs in a batch of key technologies in establishing novel network space security defense and measurement system, provide network and information security support to cyber physicalsystem.

    3. Embedded system and high-end industrial software. Make breakthroughs in a set of key technologies of ultra-high speed embedded system architecture, industrial software development platform, virtual reality and modeling&simulation, and explore novel applications in the area of industry 4.0 oriented robot manufacturing, industrial product designs and traditional manufacturing industries transformation and upgrading.

    4. Cloud computing and big data. Focusing on the areas of distributed data storage, cloud service platform, big data searching, mining, and visualization, make breakthroughs in a batch of common key technologies in cloud computing and big data, and serve the application areas of internet and smartcity.

    5. Visible multimedia computing and processing. Focusing on the research of multimedia analysis and understanding, three-dimensional geometric modeling and simulation, and multimedia watermark, make breakthroughs in a batch of novel technologies in the area of military, medical care, engineering and entertainment.

  2. National and InternationalInfluence

National influence: Our discipline started to recruit postgraduate students since 1981. Currently, we are the only discipline of computer science and technology with the right to award PhD degree in Zhejiang province managed universities. In 2014, our discipline ranks 12.72% in China. In 2015, we are elected to be the first group of A class first level discipline.

Five professors of our discipline are members of the Supervisory Committee of Computer Education of Ministry of Education, two professors are vice-director and deputy secretary-general of a committee under China's Association for Artificial Intelligence, and ten professors are members of committees under China Computer Federation.

International influence: The sensor nodes supporting Green Orbs designed by us gets favorable comment by Professor Joseph Sifakis, Turing Award winner. In the area of video, we are involved in defining MPEG-2/H.264 international standard. In the area of industrial control, we are involved in defining PLC international standard. Professors in our discipline hold the positions of PLCopen Chair in China, IEEE Biomedical signal processing technical committee member, associate chief editors of six top journals including IEEE Trans. on NNLS, Neurocomputing, etc.

Our discipline has also organized many international conferences, and is now establishing provincial international technical collaboration base. We have very close scientific collaboration relationship in the area of Human-machine interface and internet of things with many world class universities and institutes such as Illinois Institute of Technology, French national Institute of information and automation, Rome University, etc. In recent four years, our faculty members have published more than ten ESI highly cited papers and are engaged in 2 national international scientific collaboration programs and 3 provincial international scientific collaboration programs.
